Women's Skating Representatives Picked

Sasha Cohen won the US Figure Skating Championship this weekend, securing her a spot on the US Olympic team. Kimmie Meissner also has a trip to Torino in her immediate future for finishing second. The last member of the team is Michelle Kwan...for now. She will be judged by a 5-member team no later than January 27th to determine if she is in shape to represent the US in the Olympics. If she is not ready by then, Emily Hughes, sister of Olympic gold winner Sara Hughes, will go instead, as she came in third this weekend.

For the men, Johnnie Wier, Evan Lysacek and Matt Savoie will represent the US.

In pairs, Rena Inoue & John Baldwin and Marcy Hinzmann & Aaron Parchem will compete in Torino.

In Ice Dancing (let the debate begin as to if this is a sport or not), recently christened as a US citizen Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto were named to the Olympic Team, as were Melissa Gregory & Denis Petukhov and Jamie Silverstein & Ryan O’Meara.

Michelle Kwan Not In The Olympics?

Michelle Kwan, coming back form an injury that kept her from competing for 9 months, has a new injury and has withdrawn from the US Championships. Kwan pulled a groin muscle on December 19th and has been unable to practice jumps or spins since. She has the right to petition the U.S. Figure Skating International Committee for a spot on the Olympic team. Only the woman who wins the US Championships is guaranteed a spot on the Olympic team. The other two women are chosen by the committee.

Ironically, it was in 1998 when Kwan was knocked off the Olympic team by an injured Nancy Kerrigan who petitioned to be placed on the team. Hmmm...
