fencer mariel zagunis originally was not scheduled to be in the olympics based on her ranking. when another competitor scratched she was allowed to compete and won the gold medal.

don't remember the last time an american fencer won the gold? it was the st. louis olympics. don't recall the st. louis olympics? they were in 1904.

there are other fencers who were higher ranked, but on this day she was the best. a bit serendipitous, perhaps, but that's the beauty of the olympics.

athletes like zagunis, who will be a freshman at notre dame this year exemplify the olympic spirit to me. multi-million dollar contracts do not await her as they did lebron james. she competed in a sport she loved, for the love of it, a true amateur as opposed to a mercenary professional. i am sure she will go on to great things in her chosen career. the celebration when she won was truly heart warming. the dream team could take some lessons.
