Williams Loses in Doubles
Venus Williams, half of the gold medal winning women's doubles team from 2000, lost in the first round of the Olympics doubles today. Because of her sister's last minute withdrawl from the Olympics, Williams' doubles partner was Chanda Rubin, herself an excellent player. However, Williams has never played doubles with anyone other than her sister Serena. Combine that with the fact that she hasn't played doubles in over a year and you end up with some sloppy plays. The up side is that Williams is now free to concentrate on her singles game.
Andy Roddick, teamed with Mardy Fish, also lost in the first round of doubles.
