Closing Ceremonies
Could anything be cuter than the little Chinese girl singing on top of the lantern? I think not!

The following events will take place today:
Boxing, Handball, Men's Marathon, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Taekwondo, Volleyball, Water Polo and Wrestling.
On CNBC at 5 am is wrestling, water polo and taekwondo. On NBC at 9am is men's marathon, water polo, rhythmic gymnastics, boxing and handball. Later on NBC, starting at 6pm are the closing ceremonies.
Then we'll have to wait for a little less than 2 years for Torino!

On CNBC at 5 am is wrestling, water polo and taekwondo. On NBC at 9am is men's marathon, water polo, rhythmic gymnastics, boxing and handball. Later on NBC, starting at 6pm are the closing ceremonies.
Then we'll have to wait for a little less than 2 years for Torino!

Another Trip Up
The US Men get silver in the 4x100m relay after yet another bad pass. Reminiscent to the women's 4x100m, runner Coby Miller took off too soon requiring him to stop cold or run out of the passing zone. The runner behind him, Shawn Crawford, basically gave him a flat tire, ripping a hole in his shoe.
Even after the bad pass, US came soooooo close to winning. When all was said and done, however, Great Britain won the gold by 1/100th of a second. In my opinion, that's a virtual tie. I mean, if there wasn't such good time keeping at the Olympics, they both would have gotten gold, right? So really, it's all the Swiss' fault. Can't be our fault. We're American! ;)

My New Favorite Sport
I've just fallen in love with Taekwondo! Not that NBC and its minions made it easy. They just showed one whole match, which means 6 minutes, but damn, it was awesome! My new goal is to learn Taekwondo and participate in the senior olympics. Wish me luck!

Performance Enhancing?
John Capel, scheduled to run in the 4x4m men's semi-final relay for the US last night was pulled from the race just before the race and replaced with Shawn Crawford who only had one hour notice. Capel was pulled due to a positive marijuana test.
I would just like to point out that marijuana is NOT a performance enhancing drug. If anything, it's a performance degrading drug. It's more likely to make you jog around the track than run your fastest. And while you're jogging around, you're more likely to stop and jump into the stands when you see a spectator with a bag of popcorn to satisfy your munchies.
Granted, marijuana is illegal in the US and that might be a reason to pull a runner for illegal activity, but I truly hope Capel was not pulled because the officials thought he had an edge thanks to Mary Jane.

The US Olympic Committee demanded that the ad stop airing as they "reflect unauthorized use of Olympic images trademarks" and that the USOC never associates itself with political parties. The Bush campaign said they will not stop airing the ad until Sunday, the last day of the Olympics.

Colin Powell announced on the same day that he was supposed to arrive in Greece that he would not be traveling after-all. Pressing business in Wasington will keep him stateside where he will be dealing with Iraqi and Sudanese issues. The Whitehouse claims the recent protests in Athens had nothing to do with the change in plans.

"We have offered an environment of celebration and joy, security and respect of human rights"
The protests have started against Colin Powell's visit to Athens for the closing ceremonies. The protesters were stopped 2 miles from the American embassy by police.
One of the protest ogranizers stated, "We are here because we believe Colin Powell should not be coming to Greece. He has been very provocative over the whole issue of the US being in Iraq - this is a peaceful demonstration to show that we do not want him here. We are not anti-American, we are anti-American imperialism."
The Greek Public Order Minister said he recognized the demonstrators' right to protest, but asked them not to cause trouble. "We have offered an environment of celebration and joy, security and respect of human rights."

The women's Jamaican team won the 4x100m relay today after Marion Jones failed to pass the baton successfully to her teammate. The US women did not finish. After Angela Williams jumped the gun (as it were) and started running before Jones could get to her, Jones was not able to pass her the baton until she was beyond the 20 meter passing zone. Both women knew immediately they were out of the race and walked off the track. Only an hour beforehand, Jones came up 5th in the long jump competition. One has to wonder if the doping allegations interfered with her best efforts at these games.

Modern Pentathlon Resutls
In the modern pentathlon, the last event is 3000m run. If you are in first place, you start first. If you are 2 points behind the leader, then you start 2 seconds later, etc. Well, the leader, Russian Andrei Moiseyev, was soooo far ahead that with 600 meters to go, he ran to the grandstand where he saw a Russian flag and grabbed it. It fell behind him, so he went back and got it, finished the run in a light jog, waving the flag and still finished 13 seconds ahead of the silver medalist. I'd say that's a decisive win!

Speaking of being stripped of a medal, the Russian woman who won the shotput but then tested positive for drugs, refuses to return her medal. She says she's "100 percent, 200 percent" sure she did not take drugs and is the rightful winner of the shotput. What's embarrassing the Russian Olypmic Committee is that the athlete gave the medal to her brother who has returned to Russia making it rather difficult to retrieve the medal and return it to the IOC.

In a fabulous soccer match against Brazil that went into overtime, the US women's team won the gold medal. This was the final big game for names like Hamm and Foudy. They should play some farewell games in the US after the Olypmics but that's about it. It's nice to see them go out on top.

frankly, i am about ready to say, let anyone take anything they want and let's rock and roll. wouldn't it be great to see 7'8" 425lb sprinters running the 100meters in 4.8 seconds...
and of course, if people are so willing to win that they will put their health at risk - well, those folks get what they deserve...

Why, God, Why?
Why do those wrestling singlets leave nothing to the imagination? I really do NOT need an outline of Rulon Gardner's junk, TYVM. Really not attractive but thanks for sharing. Now I'm gonna have nightmares.
Oh, and BTW, it's pronounced "res-el-ing" not "rass-lin."
UPDATE: hubby, who wrestled in high school sez, "those big wrestlers are NEVER anatomically correct!" ROFL

Modern Pentathlon
So, I was curious about the modern pentathlon, as I don't really remember it from 4 years ago. Here is what it includes: shooting, fencing, swimming, equestrian, and a footrace! Oh, and did I mention that it takes place all in one day? How crazy is that?
What really gets me is the equestrian part is a show jumping course on which the competitors ride horses they have never ridden before. The horses are allotted by a lottery. I dunno about you but I've tried show jumping...little tiny baby jumps...and I was never more uncomfortable and scared for my life...well except when I drove in the LA area...anyway, the point is, if I didn't feel like I could trust the horse or that I knew how to ride a particular horse, I wasn't doing it. End of story.

Sorry Mr. Bush
Iraq's soccer team lost today to Paraguay in a semi-final game meaning they will not be playing for gold. I guess Pres. Bush can cash in those tickets to Greece now and just take it easy in Crawford, TX...after all, I think he's been campaigning for 3 days straight now! He must be exhausted!
The Iraqi team will be in the hunt for a bronze medal in soccer, which if they win, will be the second Olympic medal for that country EVER! Fricken Uday didn't do a very good job, wouldn't you say?

The Hungarian winner of the discus throw, Robert Fazekas, has been stripped of his medal and throw out of the games after he "refused to provide a complete urine sample." Apparently, he was asked to provide a smple after his award winning throw but was unable to uh...comply with the needed amount of urine. He needed to provide 75ml but only could squeeze out 25 ml.
According to Hungarian officials, Fazekas is "a deeply religious person who has always had difficulty to produce a sufficient quantity of urine in front of sample collectors. The athlete had a serious psychological block and asked to leave the doping station straight away".
Hmmm...what does religion have to do with peeing? Are they trying to say that he is a modest man due to his religious beliefs and is embarrassed to be peeing in front of others? Whatever. I mean, just drink a coupla beers buddy. You'll have to pee eventually after that.

Pappas was thought to be a contender for the gold medal in the decathlon. After feeling sharp pain in his left foot after his first javelin throw, Pappas left the field to have his foot retaped but the pain only became worse and he withdrew from competition.
On a happier note, American Bryan Clay captured the silver medal for the US in the decathlon. Congrats Bryan!

Kerri Walsh and Misty May beat the Brazilian team for the gold medal while Holly McPeak and Elaine Youngs beat an Australian team in the longest match of the Olypmics to win bronze. The McPeak/Youngs match was one hour, 11 minutes! That's quite some time for such an aerobic sport. FYI: these are the first beach volleyball medals for the US.

Did you see the Men's High Bar finals???? That was UNREAL! I can't believe the judges changed their score! That Russian athlete was very gracious. And after all the hoopla, he didn't even win a medal.
After Khorkina complained that she didn't get a medal because she's not American, can you imagine the controversy if Hamm won the gold? I hate to say it but it was really for the best that he didn't get the gold, even though he had the same score as the Italian who won.

I am sure you will be shocked to hear that the US women won the softball gold medal...SHOCKED! Actually, what was interesting is that Autralia scored a run, the only run, against the US team. How DARE the US women let a whole run get scored! I'm appalled! Ack! ;)

Surprise Visitor?
The rumor mill is busy with the story of how Bush plans to make it to the Olympics next weekend for the Soccer Gold Medal game *if* Iraq is in the game. No one seems excited about the idea: not the Olympics security and certainly not the Iraqi Soccer team. Dumb idea all around but hey, it's a once ina lifetime photo op right?
And FYI: Colin Powell will represent the USA by attending the closing ceremonies next weekend.

U.S. gymnast Paul Hamm finds himself in an impossible situation at these Olympic Games. It is not his fault that three international judges made a mistake that cost Yang Tae-young of South Korea the gold medal — the medal that we now know was given incorrectly to Hamm.
It's not Hamm's fault, but it is his opportunity.
Hamm should give his gold medal to Yang.

that would truly be a classy thing to do - and i would commend paul hamm for doing it. the fact remains that Yang Tae-young - by the rules of gymnastics, was better than Hamm and a mistake by the judges - not a subjective mistake or a judgement mistake, but an arithmetic mistake (using wrong difficulty factor) cost Yang Tae-young a gold. A gold should be awarded to the South Korean - rules should not keep one from doing what is right. if the ruling bodies aren't prepared to do the right thing, then paul hamm could teach us all the meaning of sportsmanship and the olympic ideals by saying "i don't deserve this; he does." i can't imagine a true competitor wanting to win this way.
tela o' donnell was getting her butt kicked in a 121lb wrestling match in the elimination pool round. she was down to a russian 5-0 or so in the second period and appeared to be completely outmatched with the russian squarely in control. but o'donnell took her opponent who had o' donnell in a vulnerable position, flipped and pinned her. pretty exciting. apparently, o' donnell, from homer, alaska, is an unconventional athlete and a free spirit. she is from homer, alaska - and her story sound reminiscent of something from northern exposure...

Congratulations to Mardy Fish who won the silver medal in Men's Singles Tennis in an amazing 4 hour battle vs. Chilean Nicolas Massu. Massu won the gold for Men's Doubles just hours earlier and somehow had enough energy to battle back from 2 sets to 1 with Fish to win his (and Chile's) second gold medal in these games.

“Iraq as a team does not want Mr. Bush to use us for the presidential campaign”
So says Iraqi soccer midfielder Salih Sadir. Apparently, a new Bush commercial shows both the flags of Iraq and Afghanistan while the voiceover reports: “At this Olympics there will be two more free nations—and two fewer terrorist regimes.” (I personally have not seen the ad.)
Sadir contues to say, "I want the violence and the war to go away from the city. We don't wish for the presence of Americans in our country. We want them to go away."
Another Iraqi player is quoted as saying, “How will (Bush) meet his God having slaughtered so many men and women? He has committed so many crimes.”
While Bush commented in Oregon, "The image of the Iraqi soccer team playing in this Olympics, it's fantastic, isn't it? It wouldn't have been free if the United States had not acted,' one of the Iraqi soccer players said that if he were not playing soccer, he would "for sure" be fighting as part of the resistance. Interesting juxtaposition of ideas, don't you think?

More Gymnastics Sunday Night
Tomorrow night begins the gymnastic competition on each individual aparatus. On Men's Floor, the US had the Hamm brothers, Women's Vault: Annnia Hatch, Pommel Horse: Paul Hamm, Uneven Bars: Terin Humphrey & Courtney Kupets, and Rings: the big nobody. The participants for the apparatus finals were chosen last Sunday during the preliminary rounds.
Monday night the apparatus finals will conclude with Courtney Kupets & Carly Patterson on beam, Paul Hamm on parallel bars, Mohini Bhardwaj on Women's floor, the Hamm brothers on high bar and on Men's Vault: the big nobody again.

Did anyone else see Sara Hildebrand, the US diver, bawl her eyes out when she realized she had made it into the diving finals? This is her second time at the Olympics and first time making it to the finals.
My colleague has talked about what the Olympics is all about to him, but seeing Sara so happy to make it just to the finals that she broke into tears at least 3 times is what the Olympics is about to me...reaching your goal and giving your best performance.
Her teammate, Laura Wilkinson, also made it to the finals by finishing the semi-finals in 10th place, one spot ahead of Sara.

American Paul Hamm, who became the first American to win the Olympics men's all-round gymnastics title, should not have been awarded the gold, the sport's governing body ruled Saturday.

However, Hamm's medal stands as of now. South Korean Yang Tae-young's score was based on the wrong difficulty score. Had he been scored correctly, he would have won the gold. This is unfortunate. Regardless of technicalities that prohibited reversing the decision, fair is fair and Yang Tae-young should be awarded a gold - perhaps they can give two golds as they did in the controversy in figure skating a few years back involving with Jamie Sale/her partner.

Business as Usual
The US Women's softball team had yet another shutout today against Taipei with a score of 3-0. No slaughter rule. Oh well.
US Women's Basketball won against Spain 71-58 in a toughter game that the final score would indicate. At half-time, the US women had a lead of only 2 points. Next up is China. Should be a good game.

Phelps Report
Guess who won another gold today? I'll give you one guess...
Phelps narrowly beat out teammate Ian Crocker for gold today in the Men's 100 m Butterfly with a gap between first and second of only 4 hundredths of a second. Even though Phelps has won the right to swim the Men 4 x 100m Medley Relay on Saturday, he has given up his spot to Crocker to give him another chance to win gold. Quote Phelps, "We came into this meet as a team and we're going to leave it as a team. It's the right thing to do." Regardless, if the US win a medal in the medley, Phelps will still win a medal as well since he swam the preliminary heats.
His total medal haul so far: 5 gold, 2 bronze.
BTW, Spitz was in the stands today watching Phelps tie his medal total record. In Spitz's case, that total was 7 gold. Even though Phelps can't win 7 gold, he can win 8 medals total in one summer games.

jodie henry wins gold in 100m freestyle - she set a world record in the prelim...
it was refreshing to see silver medalist inge de bruijn and natalie coughlin seem very sincere in congratulating henry for her victory.

perhaps it is just nbc's coverage, but i've found svetlana khorkina pretty annoying. she seems distant from her teammates and there seems to be little joy in er demeanor. in an interview they showed she described that she was "coming to take what was hers." uh, not so fast, dude...

During a sabre match today with US vs. France, the US competitor speared his opponent through the hand! The sabre cut through the glove by the French man's knuckles and came out his palm. After a 10 minute medical time-out, the French competitor returned to the match and WON! This moved Damien Touya to the gold medal match (duel?) where he did, in fact, win the gold. Isn't that amazing? If I were pierced thru the hand I would have fainted on the spot, not finished the match and moved on. That's one tough Frenchman!

Carly Patterson won the Women's Gymnasticls All-Around today in a very close competition. I thought after Paul Hamm's dramatic come-from-behind win last night, I thought "well I can't really expect more than that" but just as the women's team shadowed the men's silver medal win earlier this week, Patterson matched Hamm's gold medal performance one night later. Courtney Kupets also was in medal contention until an unfortunate beam routine put even the bronze out of reach. She finished 9th. Hey, Brett McClure finished 9th in the Men's all-around! What a strange coincidence!
Congrats to both Carly and Courtney!

I thought after Paul Hamm's dramatic come-from-behind win last night, I thought "well I can't really expect more than that" but just as the women's team shadowed the men's silver medal win earlier this week, Patterson matched Hamm's gold medal performance one night later. Courtney Kupets also was in medal contention until an unfortunate beam routine put even the bronze out of reach. She finished 9th. Hey, Brett McClure finished 9th in the Men's all-around! What a strange coincidence!
Congrats to both Carly and Courtney!
Swimming Controversy
Piersol won, was stripped of, and won back the gold medal in the men's 200m backstroke today. He won handily in the finals only to be told he had used an illegal turn in the last lap and was disqualified. The US filed a protest and the DQ was overturned. Of course now other countries have filed protests over the DQ being overturned, etc...Just another day at the Olympics.

So, after today's win over Greece (whose team is chock full of Greek-Americans), the combined score of all 6 of the US Women's Softball team games is 37-0. Only one game was NOT called early using the "slaughter" or "mercy" rule (vs. Japan). Pretty darned impressive!

Men's Gymnastics All-Around Results

fencer mariel zagunis originally was not scheduled to be in the olympics based on her ranking. when another competitor scratched she was allowed to compete and won the gold medal.

there are other fencers who were higher ranked, but on this day she was the best. a bit serendipitous, perhaps, but that's the beauty of the olympics.

Then today, the number 1 men's seed, Federer loses. The number 5 seed, Juan Carlos Ferraro also fell today, but that is actually good news for US fans, as he was beaten by Fish. Roddick had a tough singles match today that went to a tie breaker in the third set but pulled out victorious.

i wonder about the future of the olympics. watching the events, there seems to be tons of empty seats. at the USA/Australia women's soccer game, the stands looked nearly empty. additionally, tv viewing is down. one has to wonder with the expense involved, how long they can survive with such lackluster viewing.

The up side is that Williams is now free to concentrate on her singles game.

Men's Gymnastics Team Competition Final Results
Congratulations to Japan for winning the mens gymnastics team competition. They had outrageous scores in the last rotation with a low score of 9.787 on the high bar! The other 2 scores were 9.825 and 9.85. With scores like that, they definitely deserve the gold medal. The US Men's team came in second and Romania got the bronze.

Congrats to Morgan Hamm, the OTHER twin, who's been in his slightly younger brother's shadow all these years, for a score of 9.762 on the high bar! Great job!

Phelps went for his second gold today in the much anticipated 200 m freestyle against the Thorpedo and van den Hoogenbrand from the Netherlands. Thorpe took gold while Phelps took bronze. That gives him one gold and 2 bronze. He still has 5 more chances for gold in these games

for me, i think it is cool that mohini bhardwaj is the team captain, at the advanced age of 25. i find her persistance in finally making the team long past the age when most gymnasts are not competing at the olympic level...

A Spanking!
US Men's Basketball team took a spanking at the hands of the Puerto Rican team, losing by an embarrassing 19 points! Final score 92-73. Could this be the first US Men's team to not win gold?
Makes you wonder if all those NBA stars that refused the invitation to play in the Olympics are having second thoughts.

Dejected Yao Wants to Quit
After a sound loss to the Spanish basketball team, NBA star Yao Ming commented that he would like to cut his international basketball career with the Chinese team short. After the 83-59 loss, Yao said, "I feel so disappointed. I lost all my hopes for this team. We changed our skin, but we are the same. Just like the world championships in Indianapolis two years ago." The Chinese team came in 12th during the world basketball championships in Indianapolis in 2002. "I didn't play well either. I am thinking about retiring from the national team. Not now, but soon I will. In Indianapolis I was the youngest player, now I am an elder, but still there is no hope for us."
My question is, does Yao have the option to quit his national team? China doesn't exactly let their citizens just do whatever they want or necessarily even let them move out of the country. Remember when you were a kid and you'd be playing kickball or t-ball or something like that and the game would be called early because your team was losing by like 27-1? Ahhh yes, the old slaughter rule -- in effect when you just wanted to go home and lick your wounds as there was no way you were going to win and didn't feel like being embarrassed any further. Well, little did I know that the slaughter rule was in play at the Olympics!
When the US women were ahead 10-0 after the 5th inning in a softball game against Australia, the slaughter rule was called. According to Olympic rules, if a team is behind by 7 or more runs after the 5th inning, the game is called. What is more remarkable about this win is that Australia is the only team to beat the US in softball twice in Olympic competition.
So, if you're keeping count, in the US's two softball games during these Olympics, the combined scores of the games is 17-0, meaning that both of their games have ended early thanks to the slaughter rule.
Remember when you were a kid and you'd be playing kickball or t-ball or something like that and the game would be called early because your team was losing by like 27-1? Ahhh yes, the old slaughter rule -- in effect when you just wanted to go home and lick your wounds as there was no way you were going to win and didn't feel like being embarrassed any further. Well, little did I know that the slaughter rule was in play at the Olympics!

Update on Iranian Judo Boycott
World judo officials debated whether sanctions against Iran were appropriate after Iranian Arash Miresmaeili refused to fight an Israeli in what appeared to be a political boycott.
Arash Miresmaeili was quoted by an Iranian news agency as saying: "Although I have trained for months and am in shape I refused to face my Israeli rival in sympathy with the oppressed Palestinian people ... I am not upset about the decision I have made."
A report has surfaced that Miresmaeili didn't make weight by 2 kg (4.4 lbs) has surfaced. As it is highly unusual for such a judo expert (Miresmaeli is a world champion) to be so far over his weight, the question now is, did he not make his weight so that he would not have to fight the Israeli? If so, his actions go against Olympic ideals and sanctions may be placed against both Miresmaeili and the Iranian Judo program.
An Iranian National Olympic Committee spokesperson in Tehran told Reuters on Sunday that Miresmaeli had been instructed not to compete. "This is a general policy of our country to refrain from competing against athletes of the Zionist regime and Arash Miresmaeili has observed this policy," she said. Asked whether refusing to fight was his decision she said, "No".
In contrast to all this controversy, an Israeli team spokesman stated on Saturday, "We have come to Athens to participate in sport and not in politics. The nationality of Israel's opponents is unimportant and they will face anybody."

In fact, I can only guess that it is a mixture of different sports since some scores were 4-1 while others 71-69! So the first could be baseball, softball or even soccer while the second looks more like basketball. Is that stupid or what? We could play a game with the scores such as "guess the sport and win my adulation" if you like. The scores are here.

Three Cheers for the Red, White & Blue
Did anyone notice that the US athletes were NOT waving their country's flag during the Parade of Nations last night? That was no mistake. The athletes have been told to tone down the patriotic flag waving. In political double-speak, the athletes have been told to "show respect to the flag." That means not hanging the flag out on the balcony of their dorm rooms like thousands of other ahtletes from around the country are doing and not wrapping the flag around themselves when they win an event. While showing the US flag has not been officially banned, do not expect to see it nearly as much as in past games.
Also, for the first time ever, athletes have been warned against wearing their official red, white and blue outfits which they are usually required to wear while at the Olympics. The officials are concerned about US athletes being targets for violence.

Blaine Wilson Falls
Blaine Wilson, the tenacious American gymnast who has already comeback from a torn bicep muscle this year, fell during his high bar routine today. While practicing on Thursday in the Olympic facilites, the judges informed Wilson that one of his moves would not be worth as much as was thought. The judges claimed that the move, a Stalder Hop Full, had been overvalued at the World Championships last year and would not be worth as much in Athens.
In response to this news both Wilson and Jason Gatson, who also performs the move, changed their routines at the last minute to a less risky--yet worth as much--move. However, this gave both athletes only 2 days to polish up the new routine. While on the high bar today, Wilson fell on the substituted move, a Kovacs, and landed hard on his head. Wilson scored an 8.862 while Gatson scored a 9.337. Brett McClure chose to leave in the Stalder Hop Full and received 9.662 due to other moves that brought the start value of his routine up to a 10.

Iran had a chance for a medal in Judo, one of the few chances they have for any medal in thesse games. However, the Iranian and world Judo champion, Arash Miresmaili, was matched with an Israeli in his first match. What's the problem? Iran does not recognize Israel's right to exist. This extends to a ban on coming into contact with any Israelis. Mireshmaili chose to withdraw from competition instead of going against his country's policies. Miresmaili claimed that he was proud to withdraw from competition in solidarity with the Palestinians.
To me, it seems too bad that these competitors could not see each other as athletes, instead of political enemies or allies. These athletes have an opportunity to show the rest of the world how we all can get along. I mean when you think about it, none of us choose where we are born. Most of us do not choose the policies our governments put in place. When it comes down it it, we are all just human beings trying to get through another day.

Observations of the Opening Ceremony by an American Couch Potato
OK, first I must admit that I did not see all the opening ceremony and I saw the first 45 minutes with no sound at a sushi bar. That said, here are some comments:
1) Why was there a little boy in an origami hat sailing across the man-made lake in the stadium? I didn't know that Greece was known for their origami.
2) I didn't know the concept of "carousel" from Logan's Run had come to life in Europe! Were those all the athletes past 35 flying into the air?
3) Was the guy dancing on the giant white cube an homage to Bjork's old band, Sugar Cubes?
4) Could Bob Costas shut the hell up for 30 seconds in a row? Jeez! Your jokes are lame Bob. Why not let us here some of the actual staduim sounds?
5) That was some massive spliff being lit up for the Rastafarian Olympics! Oh sorry, that was the Olympic flame.
6) Loved the parade of nations but Hellooooo NBC! Could we see more than 2 countries before another extended commercial break? That was incredibly annoying.

Athlete Spotlight: Sanaa Abu Bkheet
You probably haven't heard of her and you sure as hell have never been to her country but Abu Bkheet is someone you won't soon forget. She is the first woman to compete for Palestine at these Athens games.
With one pair of shoes, she trained for the 800-m in sand by the sea. When she started to train back in 2000 in shorts and a t-shirt, the locals threw stones at her for her immodest dress. She switched to a full dress track suit even though she was running in brutal heat. When Israel imposed a temporary ban on Palestinians aged 16 to 35 from leaving the fenced-in Gaza Strip, she did not know if she would ever get to Athens in time for the games.
She is no threat to break a world record and a dark horse to medal at all. In fact, her time does not qualify for the A-standard, the maximum time most athletes need to post in trials to even be considered for the games. However, an exception has been made for her, so that she could be part of the 2-athlete Palestinian team. (The other athlete is a swimmer.)
Luckily, she is now in Athens, with several pairs of shoes and even a sponsor and is ready to compete. For the past month, Abu Bkheet has been training on the Greek island of Kos on an actual hard track, which she says is very hard to get used to after training on dirt roads and soft sand. Her main ambition now is to win a scholarship to a foreign university.
Look for Sanaa Abu Bkheet on August 20th when she runs for the pride of Palestine in the women's 800 meter.

Serena Williams Withdraws
Just moments before she was to board a plane for Greece, Serena Williams decided to withdraw due to pain in her knee. A doctor told her she could suffer long term damage if she plays on her knee at this time. She is the second US women's tennis player to withdraw in the past 2 days. Her sister, Venus, will now play doubles with Chanda Rubin.

USA Women's Soccer Broadcast
You can start watching the Olympics live tomorrow with the broadcast of USA Women's Soccer vs Greece on MSNBC starting at 10:30am eastern. Yes, I know the opening ceremonies aren't until Friday but every Olympic games have so many soccer matches to schedule it is not unusual for some games to be played before the official start of the games. Archery also will start on Thursday, one day before the official opening.

Capriati Withdraws from Olympics
Jennifer Capriati has decided that a hamstring injury will keep her from competing at the Athens games. She is hoping to play in the US Open which has been pushed back until after the Olympics. A replacement has not been chosen at this time for the US Tennis team.

Men's Basketball Synposis
USA Men's Basketball had an embarrassing loss to Italy this past week, losing 95-78. In the next game against Germany, they won with a buzzer-beating 3 point shot. As the team continues to learn how to play with eachother, the beat Serbia by a score of 78-60. Right now they are about pegging even with Turkey, who is not playing in the Olympics.
With basketball being a purely USA invention, I feel we have a lot of pride in this particular sport. Any time we don't dominate in it is disappointing. I hope they can gel a little more before their opening Olympic game in exactly one week. That's not a lot of time to get their sh*t together...
